VirusBurst (also called Virus Burst or VirusBurster, and previously known as VirusRescue) is a fake anti-spyware application, or rogue software. It is a derivative of SpywareQuake, which itself is a derivative of the SmitFraud malware program. Once installed on a PC, it begins to display false messages informing the user that the system is infected with spyware.
VirusBurst looks like a legitimate application for removal of spyware, but it installs a trojan in an attempt to trick you into buying the software. Once VirusBurst Trojan installs on your PC where it displays, from a system tray icon, an update notification. The update notification is similar to the Windows update balloon. Users are then tricked into clicking the message.
The VirusBurst pops up the following fake warning message:
"System detected virus activities. They may cause critical system failure. Please, use antimalware software to clean and protect your system from parasite programs. Click this balloon to get all available software."
Clicking leads the user to a website where you are prompted to purchase. VirusBurst may install without user notification or consent by a Trojan.
